A megatropolis known for its dining and nightlife, Jakarta is the main gateway to Java. There are several worthwhile attractions to fill a few days (and some memorable nights) before moving beyond the city. Taman Mini is a miniature replication of the entire archipelago and a great overview of what to explore. The national monument Monas is an easy stop and not far from Grand Indonesia mall and the exclusive Plaza Indonesia if you’re looking to pick up a Rolex and a spare Prada bags.

Ancol is great for family fun. Dufan (fantasy world) is like Indonesia’s answer to Disney World. And in the same area you can also visit Sea world the Art Market and ride on a cable car above the beach.

Getting out of town is Puncak and the Thousand Islands which are popular places for Jakarta residents to get away from the hustle and bustle. Be sure to catch up on some history before you leave at Kota Tua where the Dutch colonial influence can be seen.
