With more than seventeen thousand islands to visit Indonesia really does take island hopping to the next level. To kickstart your exploration, here’s a few islands definitely worth hopping too.
Sumatra is quickly becoming synonymous with its orangutans, the rainforests home to these famous, yet increasingly endangered creatures. They’re dying to see you so get a visit in quick before it’s too late.
To the north is Sumatra’s volcanic Lake Toba that’s also bursting to be visited, so much so it's actually created its own private tourist attraction; Pulau Samosir. This lava-based island at its centre is home to indigenous tribes that supposedly still practice ritualistic cannibalism, so be wary what you eat if you do dare a visit.
If you’re over the tourist-ridden streets of Kuta, fast ferry or fly it over to Lombok Island. This surfer’s paradise has beaches that are equal if not better than Bali’s, with many more untouched spots that could be even better than all the rest. If you want to make your mark and are willing to get exploring, there are many more hidden places yet to be discovered on this off the beaten island.
