1. Lake Toba
With it’s ancient Batak boats, traditional local music and Indo cuisine, this is the place to go if you want to meet the real Indonesia. Widely unwesternised and unchanged by time, this magical Indonesian destination is quite unlike any other.
2. Kaolin Lake
Whilst we’re on the topic of lakes, how about a visit to Kaolin lake? This kaolinite crater with its crystal clear waters and pure white surroundings looks as though its covered in powerdery white snow - definitely not your usualy tropical paradise. After you’ve checked out the lake, head into one of the local warungs and try the legendary local dish Mie Babi, an extremely tasty pork dish found only in this region.
If you want to get away from the noise and rush of big cities, head to Kepulauan Togean. It has an awesome traditional floating market where you’ll find incredible ornaments that can’t be sourced anywhere else in the world - Great for something a bit alternative to decorate the house with. The best thing about this more remote region is that you can travel totally at your leisure without the overcrowding and pollution associated with the larger Indo centres.
